Bolo, a vivacious 3-year-old pit bull, was only supposed to spend a single day at the Hopkinsville Police Department. Yet, his brief visit turned into a heartwarming new chapter as he won over the hearts of everyone at the station, becoming their beloved ‘Paw-trol Officer.’
Bolo’s adventure began with the “Paws Patrol Wednesday” program, designed to showcase shelter dogs and help them find forever homes. Introduced by Royale Marfil, the program allowed a different shelter dog to spend a day with the police each week.
From the moment Bolo arrived, he made an unforgettable impression. “Once Bolo felt at ease and started engaging with everyone, it wasn’t long before everyone was asking, ‘Can we adopt him? Can he stay?’” Marfil told The Dodo.
Bolo quickly made himself comfortable, flopping down and snoozing on the office floor, where he seemed completely at home. “Watching him relax and drift off to sleep was definitely a highlight of the day,” Marfil said.
As the day drew to a close, Bolo showed signs of reluctance to return to the shelter. “He didn’t want to leave, and neither did anyone at the police department,” Marfil explained. “I brought him to Chief Newby, who agreed, ‘Why not let him stay?’”
With a plan in place, Bolo began his new routine: spending his days at the police department and nights with Marfil. This arrangement allowed Bolo to become a beloved part of the daily office life while forming a strong bond with his new family.
The final confirmation of Bolo’s new home came when Marfil took him to PetSmart for a collar and toys. “That’s when Bolo truly realized what was happening,” Marfil recalled. “He was so happy.”
In a special ceremony held in early November, Bolo was officially welcomed to the team and even received the title of Hopkinsville’s First Paw Patrol Officer. Marfil noted that Bolo has become an integral part of the office, with his presence so impactful that people often forget it’s technically her office now.
Visitors to the police department frequently bring treats for Bolo, who has become known for his infectious smile and friendly demeanor. “He has the biggest smile on his face every day,” Marfil said. “No matter how tough your day is, Bolo will make you smile.”
Unlike other police dogs, Bolo’s role is simply to be himself—lovable and endearing. His presence has brought warmth and joy to the department, making him a cherished member of the team and a symbol of the positive impact that a little kindness can have.
