Stanley is a velcro dog whose affectionate nature thrives on physical closeness. His love language is undoubtedly physical touch, and he has a strong aversion to being alone. Constantly seeking contact, Stanley insists on being near his dad at all times. If his dad isn’t available, Stanley will seek out anyone nearby for comfort and closeness.

Having experienced abandonment in the past, Stanley carries a deep fear of being left alone again. He clings tightly to his devoted owner’s hand, finding security and reassurance in their presence. Despite the challenges of his past, Stanley’s bond with his owner transcends his fears, illustrating the healing power of love and companionship.

Meet Stanley, The Velcro Dog

Sam Clarence adopted Stanley as a six-month-old puppy from Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue, where he was initially intended to be a temporary foster. However, Stanley quickly became a “foster fail” when Sam couldn’t bear to part with him.

Having volunteered as a dog walker at the shelter, Sam was approached to foster two six-month-old male puppies found with their mother on an abandoned property nearby. They were frightened, hungry, and desperately in need of care.

“When we got home, Stanley was terrified. It took him an hour to cautiously emerge from the car. Once he did, I gave him a soothing bath, a hearty meal, and a cozy spot by the fire,” Sam recounted to The Dodo.

Adjusting to indoor life took some time for Stanley, but his bond with Sam was immediate and profound. “As a puppy, he slept beside me on the bed, always touching. He would curl up behind me with at least one paw touching my back; if I moved, he moved,” Sam shared.

Stanley’s need for physical closeness with his dad has only grown stronger over time, reflecting his deep-seated desire for security and affection after his tumultuous start in life.

Must Always Be Touching

“We have to be touching at all times. He’s very forceful about it,” Sam shared about Stanley’s unwavering need for physical closeness.

From a frightened stray pup to a devoted ‘velcro dog,’ Stanley insists on holding his dad’s hand whenever they’re together, even in the car as Sam drives.

Stanley’s insistence on physical contact is non-negotiable. “If we’re watching TV, it’s the same thing. I’ll get paws flying at me until I touch him. It’s just his quirk. If I’m not around, he’ll do it to my housemate as well,” Sam chuckled.

Stanley thrives on outdoor adventures, particularly enjoying trips to the beach, river, or lakes.

Above all, Stanley finds comfort and joy in the presence of his dad. Their bond is his sanctuary, and there’s nowhere Stanley would rather be.
