A vigilant truck driver became an unexpected hero when he spotted a trembling little dog in distress, abandoned in a ditch on the side of the road in St. Louis, Missouri.
His sharp awareness and dedication to making a difference played a crucial role in saving the dog’s life. Despite being unable to stop, he promptly called Stray Rescue of St. Louis to alert them about the desperate puppy needing assistance.
This story reminds us that in our everyday lives, we can profoundly impact others by reaching out and offering help to those who cannot advocate for themselves.
A Call For Help
Stray Rescue of St. Louis swiftly responded when a compassionate truck driver spotted a quivering brown and white puppy abandoned in a ditch and called for assistance.
Upon arrival, they discovered the small pup, affectionately named Odella in honor of the driver named Odell who alerted them and ultimately saved her life. Chief Life Saving Officer Donna Lochmann approached Odella, and her tail immediately began to wag despite her fear and hunger.
However, it was soon discovered that Odella was in significant pain from being hit by a car, sustaining injuries including a dislocated hip and a broken foot, as revealed by X-rays.
“This little 6-month-old girl needed a lot of help, but thanks to Odell, she was finally receiving the care she urgently needed,” the rescue shared on their blog.
The rescue expressed deep gratitude to the truck driver whose keen observation and quick action ensured Odella’s rescue and initiated her path to healing.
Odella’s Healing Journey
To save Odella’s leg, veterinarians had to reset her dislocated hip and secure it with a splint. The rescue and medical team spared no effort to ensure the sweet pup could keep her leg.
Her recovery journey faced a setback with an additional femur fracture, extending her healing time. However, after a couple of months of dedicated care, Odella fully recovered. She regained her health and was soon able to run and play on all fours again.
Throughout this process, Odella stayed with her foster mom, Donna Lochmann, who had already adopted several rescues and quickly fell in love with Odella.
“When Odella first came to my house, it was clear she was there to stay. She unpacked her bags, and that was it!” Donna shared in a comment on Facebook.
Now, Odella enjoys a joyful life with Donna, her furry siblings, and plenty of toys and treats.
“She has the happiest personality and loves playing with other dogs. She adores her toys and peanut butter-filled Kongs,” Donna wrote.
This happy ending wouldn’t have been possible without the kindness of Odell, whose timely call rescued Odella from a ditch where she lay with broken bones and no one to care for her, to now thriving in a loving family.
