Being a K-9 puppy is no easy task, especially for newcomers like Brody, the latest addition to the Bristol Police Department in Rhode Island. His official swearing-in ceremony, held on Monday, April 6, 2020, marked a significant moment for both him and the community.

Despite the importance of the occasion, Brody, a 12-week-old chocolate Labrador puppy, managed to sleep through the entire ceremony. Officer Keith Medeiros, his handler, stood in for him during the proceedings. It wasn’t surprising, as Brody’s penchant for deep slumber matched his enthusiasm for playtime.

The event, broadcast live on the Bristol, R.I. Police Department’s Facebook page, quickly went viral. Chief Kevin Lynch spoke warmly about Brody while the little pup dozed peacefully on the desk, occasionally waking up for a quick photo op.

“He plays hard and sleeps hard,” Officer Medeiros shared with The Dodo. “When he’s not playing, he’s sleeping, which is tough because he sleeps a lot.”

Despite Brody’s nap stealing the show, viewers found his sleepy antics endearing. Chief Lynch remarked, “This is a big day for the Bristol Police Department. As soon as Brody wakes up, we have many successes ahead, and he’s going to be a superstar for Bristol.”

Brody holds a special role as the Bristol Police Department’s first Comfort and Therapy dog, part of a new initiative aimed at enhancing community relations. Named in honor of Bristol (“B”) and Rhode Island (“Rody”), he was generously donated by Boonefield Labradors of Rindge, New Hampshire.

Initially considered for bomb-sniffing duties, the department embraced Officer Medeiros’ proposal for a therapy dog. Brody’s responsibilities include visiting schools, nursing homes, and comforting crime victims—a role crucial for alleviating stress, anxiety, and PTSD within the community.

During the challenging times of Covid-19, Brody’s presence has been particularly uplifting. Officer Medeiros noted, “People are really stressed, especially in law enforcement. Just by walking into the police department with Brody, people immediately smile.”

Despite the solemnity of his duties, Brody’s adorable antics bring joy wherever he goes. Follow his journey on Instagram to see more of his charming escapades.

Welcome to the force, K-9 Brody. Here’s to a career filled with treats, belly rubs, and well-deserved naps.
