Abandoning a pup is one of the most heartless things you can do to a pet. Unfortunately, cases of abandonment have been increasing in the U.S. in recent years. According to the University of Florida, this issue is particularly prevalent in South Florida.
Cruel owners not only abandon their pets but often abuse them beforehand, making it an even more tragic situation for the poor animals.
One particularly disturbing case occurred recently in Broward County, highlighting the severity of this issue and the need to share these stories.
Heartless Owners at Their Worst
On a cold February day, a couple traveling through South Florida noticed something unusual in the middle of the Florida Everglades in Broward County.
A soft moan came from a poor creature curled up on the dirty ground. They quickly realized it was a dog. He was dirty and very sad, refusing to make eye contact. They suspected he had been dumped and saw that he was extremely weak.
This poor dog had been starving for days and had lost hope of being rescued. He was on the verge of shutting down.
The couple knew they needed to act quickly to save the pup. They spent nearly four hours trying to find help, but no one came.
Officers with Big Hearts on Duty
“We called all the rescuers and organizations for four full hours, but nobody responded,” the couple said. “In the end, the police came.”
Officers from the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived to respond to the call about an “extreme case of abuse.”
When they arrived, one officer immediately showed the dog some kindness, giving him a bit of food and water to help him endure the journey.
The officers managed to gain some of the pup’s trust, but he was so weak that he couldn’t even move from his spot. He needed assistance, and getting him to the car was a challenging task, but the dog eventually made it.
These brave officers demonstrated the true spirit of their honorable job. Way to go, boys, and thank you for your service!
Consequences of Cruel Treatment
Once the deputies provided Powder, as they named him, with essential care and stabilized his condition, they contacted Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue.
Immediately responding, Sandra Dezelen, the founder of Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Care, met them and took Powder into their care. Upon examination, she noted that Powder had been exposed to the elements for a significant time and that his recovery would be lengthy.
After thorough testing the next day, it was determined that Powder had a severe infection, causing widespread redness over his body. Additionally, local eye surgeon Dr. Rob Schneider diagnosed Powder with Entropia, requiring surgery on both eyes.
These medical interventions highlight the severe consequences of cruelty inflicted by heartless individuals.
New Life That Truly Healed Him
Despite the haunting experience Powder endured, he found safety in the loving care of those who showed him compassion.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Dezzy’s Second Chance, Powder healed from the painful skin issues and successfully underwent eye surgery. He also gained 4 pounds and regained his playful, happy demeanor, now filled with trust thanks to the kindness of caring individuals. His new dog companions at Second Chance helped him rebuild his confidence and brought a smile back to his face.
Although there hasn’t been an official announcement, Sandra confirmed in a comment on the “Lost Pet Found Pet” Facebook Page that Powder has been adopted and is now enjoying a new life filled with love in a deserving family.
We hope his new family continues to shower him with love and helps him fully regain his trust in people.
