Abandoning a puppy ranks among the most callous acts one can commit against a pet.
Regrettably, instances of abandonment have been prevalent in recent years across the United States, with South Florida notably affected, as highlighted by the University of Florida [1].
These heartless individuals not only discard their pets on the streets but also subject them to abuse, inflicting tremendous suffering on these innocent animals.
A recent incident in Broward County exemplifies this cruelty vividly, underscoring the urgency of sharing such stories.
Heartless Owners At Their Worst
On a chilly February day, a couple traveling through South Florida came across a distressing sight in the Florida Everglades of Broward County. Amidst the darkness, they spotted a pitiful figure curled up on the ground, emitting soft moans. It was a dog.
The poor creature appeared dirty and despondent, avoiding eye contact with the couple. They suspected he had been abandoned, noting his weakened state and obvious signs of neglect.
Starving and seemingly resigned to his fate after days of hunger, the dog showed little hope of rescue. The couple understood the urgency of the situation and spent nearly four hours desperately seeking assistance, but help did not arrive.
Officers With Big Hearts On Duty
“We called every rescue and organization for a full 4 hours, but nobody responded,” the couple recounted. “Finally, the police arrived.”
Responding to a report of extreme abuse, officers from the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene. One officer immediately offered the dog food and water, demonstrating kindness amid the dire circumstances.
Despite the dog’s weakness and inability to move, the officers managed to carefully transport him to safety. It was a challenging task, but they succeeded in getting him into the police car.
These dedicated officers exemplified compassion and professionalism in their duties. Kudos to them for their heroic efforts and thank you for your service!
Consequences of Cruel Treatment
After providing Powder, as they named him, with essential care and stabilizing his condition, the deputies reached out to Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue for assistance.
The rescue responded promptly, and Sandra Dezelen, the founder, personally met them to take charge of Powder’s care. Upon examining him, she noted that he had likely endured prolonged exposure and would require extensive recovery.
Following comprehensive tests the next day, it was determined that Powder suffered from a severe infection, evident from the redness covering his body. Additionally, a local eye surgeon, Dr. Rob Schneider, diagnosed him with Entropia, requiring surgery on both eyes.
These medical interventions underscore the severe repercussions of cruelty inflicted by heartless individuals.
New Life That Truly Healed Him
Despite the harrowing ordeal Powder had endured, he found solace in the loving care of Dezzy’s Second Chance. Under their attentive watch, Powder’s skin healed from the troubling red spots, and his successful eye surgeries restored his sight.
Gaining 4 pounds, Powder blossomed into a playful and joyful dog once more, buoyed by the affection of his new canine companions at Second Chance. Their support bolstered his confidence and brought a smile back to his face.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement, Sandra confirmed in a comment on the “Lost Pet Found Pet” Facebook Page that Powder has found a loving forever home. Now, he enjoys a new life filled with love and deserves every bit of happiness in his new family.
