“It was quiet and sad, and then Gucci brought joy into the house.”
Johanna Carrington, who spent her childhood in an orphanage in war-torn Germany, never had the chance to own a dog. Now, at 100 years old, she’s more than making up for lost time. Recently, she welcomed an 11-year-old Chihuahua mix named Gucci into her home, bringing new joy and companionship into her life.
“I just love him,” Carrington told TODAY.
After the loss of her previous dog, Rocky, Carrington’s home in Moss Beach, California, felt too quiet. When she mentioned to her daughter, Debbie, that she wanted another dog, they worried that Johanna’s age might be a barrier to adoption. Thankfully, a neighbor who volunteers at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco offered a solution. Gucci, a soulful senior Chihuahua mix, had been rescued from a hoarding situation involving 22 dogs and was ready for a loving home.
Gucci immediately made himself comfortable.
Part of the adoption arrangement included Johanna’s caregiver, Eddie Martinez, who agreed to take Gucci on daily walks and help with his care. When Gucci’s foster parent brought him over on September 2, he instantly made himself at home.
“He came to the house like he’d been here before. It was remarkable,” Johanna said. “He saw me sitting on my chair, jumped up on me, and sat on my lap. He made himself very, very comfortable. He was just our baby right away.”

Since then, Gucci has been living the good life. Johanna showers him with toys that he loves to fetch and gives him back massages while they watch TV together. At night, Gucci burrows into blankets on their bed to create a cozy nest.
Gucci enjoys a life filled with love and toys.
Johanna is already planning a special celebration with Gucci for her 101st birthday in December. She attributes her longevity to a healthy lifestyle—she’s never smoked or drank alcohol—but believes that spending time with pets is one of the keys to a long and happy life.
This heartwarming match between Johanna and Gucci proves that love and companionship have no age limits.
